The bunny rabbit is universally prized in our damned, broken, disconnected modern society as a symbol of almost unbearable cuteness. The precious twinkling nose, the piercing innocent eyes and fluffy cotton ball tail disarms us. It makes even the most hardened man think “awww” if only for a moment. Reality is a much darker place for the lighting-quick bunny rabbit. Hawks, eagles, falcons, owls, feral dogs and cats seek to mangle and dismantle the flesh of every soft bunny rabbit for a quick meal. This is our metaphor. This is the high cost of beauty. This is the world in which we live. To be cuddled and fed and kept warm at night, only to have inhumanly sharp talons sunk into your shoulders from above and carried away into your demise as blood drips through your whiskers. Perhaps you are the bunny, or you know one. Maybe you’re the starving red fox seeking a body to satisfy you.
